Well I was so unhappy with my patch pockets that I took them off the jacket fronts. Barb loaned me a book called Sew Any Patch Pocket, by Claire B. Shaeffer. I need to look through it and see if there are any other patch pockts that I like more than those that are included in the pattern. I'm also guessing that I'm not going to like any patch pocket on the jacket, because I don't think I have any other jacket with patch pockets. They're either welt pockets, or tucked into a seam. Maybe a lined pocket . . .

No other progress on the jacket. I just can't seem to get past these pockets.

I worked out a lining pattern for my By Popular Demand jacket today. The jacket pattern is unlined, but I really like the way a lined jacket slips on and off so I decided to create my own. Here are the steps I followed:

I pinned together the jacket back and back yoke together so the jacket back was now one piece. I traced off a copy of it for the lining.

To that copy I cut off a back neck facing at the top (to be cut from linen) and added a seam allowance to the lower edge.

Then I added an inch at the center fold of the back to allow a pleat for wearing ease.

I added a quarter inch at the outside shoulder, tapering to nothing toward the center, per the instructions in Sandra Betzina's Power Sewing. I added another quarter inch at the underarm, tapering to nothing at the waist, also per Power Sewing.

On the fronts, I folded back the front facings. Then I traced the remaining portion of the front, adding one and a quarter inches at the front edge, per Power Sewing. I added the same quarter inch at the shoulder seam and underarm seam.

It felt like a lot to do that, given our hot sticky weather here. But I'm glad it's done. I've used my lining pattern so twice now for my Capri Jackets and it's worked out really well.

I'm enthused again, to keep working on this jacket. I think making the lining pattern and taking off the pockets really added to my motivation.
