I recently was a guest host on the Creative Machine mailing list/discussion. The discussion turned to buttons and care of precious buttons. I thought you might be interested in some ideas posted there.
| Quote: | Barb: First "rule" of button care is to avoid extremes of temperature. When using a washer, set on gentle and extra low dry. The drying process can be damaging to some natural products such as wood, horn or bone. Dyed coconut might tolerate a gentle wash (watch for unstable color) but I would not recommend the dryer. Shells can withstand low dry, but are easily chipped if tossed in the dryer. To prevent chipping, try these techniques:
- Turn garment inside out
- Cover buttons with foil
- Use button pins and remove before cleaning
Kathleen: You can also make buttonholes in both sides of a garment and attach the buttons to a strip of interfaced fabric. To launder, just unbutton and remove the strip. |
Kathleen's idea was a big hit with people on the list. What are your best button care ideas?
