So many of the stripes in the market this season are crosswise stripes. Of course, most of us find those a wardrobe no-no. But the fabrications were way too enticing to pass them up so we bought anyway! As we've been working with the fabrics in the sampling and cutting room, we've noticed that most of them are perfect candidates for railroading--using the crosswise as the lengthwise. In order to railroad, a fabric needs to be very stable on the crosswise grain and preferably have a little give in the lengthwise. Some of the stripes that are in stock actually have the spandex component runing lengthwise, making us believe that the designer intended to railroad from the start. We suspect there's an economic reason behind all this crosswise striping!!
Regardless of the reason, we sewers can make it work our way! Many of the stripes are very pleasing and subtle in contrast running across the body, but if you prefer, go for the railroading!
Anyone have a current fabric that they are using this way?

Thanks Barb! Good idea to take advantage of the crosswise stripes. I've bought some this season and planned to try some blouses placing some pieces on the diagonal. But I had not thought of simply taking a crosswise stripe and cutting the pattern pieces lengthwise, but now I will!

Also, I just got my July issue of Threads which has an article on topic - called "Go Against the Grain" - several good ideas to use stripes in alternative ways.

I'd love to hear other's ideas and experience on this...
