I love simple bias skirts, but my question is about lining. Should I cut the lining on the bias, too?

Hi Becky,
I love bias skirts too, and I've had some experience with them, but I haven't lined one. However, not long ago I had a discussion about it with several other professional dressmakers, and the consensus was that it would be best to keep the grainlines consistent and cut the lining on the bias as well. You don't want to conteract the drape of the bias by putting straight of grain under it, even though you might think you'd want to stabilize it. The layers should only be joined at the waist, and maybe not even at the zipper - it's tricky enough to put a zipper in a bias seam without having to deal with a second layer of fabric. Stabilize the seam allowance in the zipper area with a strip of fusible interfacing. I'd probably narrow hem the edge of the lining at the zipper and leave it loose.
Be sure to cut very wide seam allowances - I've used 2" before! - and let the garment hang for a day or two before hemming - I'm sure you've seen RTW bias-cut skirts and dresses with very uneven hems - this is because they don't allow the fabric to grow before the hem is put in!
Give it a try, and let us know how you make out!

Janee, thanks for the reply. I usually use an elastic waist and my lining is tucked in the elastic casing, and I don't have to mess with a zipper. Cutting the lining on the bias makes sense now that you explain it.

| Can you recommend good patterns for a bias skirt?

Deborah,
My pattern is Butterick 3654, but they are easy to find in all the brands. I like the basic A-line with only two seams. The simple shape lets you adjust the lower width if you want.
If you opt for a waist band, do not cut the waist band on the bias.
