Hi,

My name is Linda and I am a new member. I am a Couture/Knit Couture handbag designer as of 2003. (Although I do not knit - my expertise is via design only).
I am excited about this forum and look forward to meeting and communicating with others.
I have a fair knowledge of sewing, but it has been awhile since, and I'm probably not up for a daily dose at this point as the majority of my time is spent designing, also, I am a perfectionist, so I aggravate myself - you probably know how that goes. Laughing
I would like to say how much I appreciate (Judy - fabrics) with my samplings/order and such...so courteous and willing to help...that's just what I am looking for.
Now, regarding sewing: I would really appreciate a (quick) tip tutorial on installing a back wall zipper pocket (for handbags). THANKS!...I look forward to chatting. Smile

Hi Linda - Welcome to the Forum - you will find a lot of good information here, in addition to fun community of talented sewists. I agree - Judy and all the gals at SawyerBrook are very helpful with fabric samples and info for selecting interfacing, linings etc.

I have made many purses in the past few years and I'd love to see and hear about your creations. The small amount of time I've spent in the design phase has taught me how time consuming it can be, so I can imagine what you're doing. Will you sew your prototypes yourself or do you have others doing that?

For inserting a zipper into a pocket....you can see the method I've used in this link which is a great tutorial. http://sewing.about.com/od/bagstotespurseproject/ss/liningpocket.htm

I would add a extra step/tip. For securing the four edges of the cut rectangle, I love a product called Steam-A-Seam2 fusible tape. It comes on a roll and I used the 1/4" width (they also make 1/2" width). The tape allows you to fuse those raw edges to the back of the lining, and will create nice straight edges which in turn gives you a good looking finished product once the zipper is installed.

I'll be looking forward to hearing more from you - please keep us posted on your progress!

Hi Lois,

Thank you for your great response and zipper installation info/personal tip! I always appreciate good advice from " the voice of experience."

As mentioned, I have been designing since 2003. I have taken time that I needed to reach my place of comfortability before 'testing the market'. During that time I have learned sooo much from a number of (name) handbag and knit designers - who have generously offered valuable advice...I am thankful. All have encouraged me to take that first step even if it means beginning with a home-based product and working my way up. Presently, this is the avenue I have chosen to take.

I am not formally educated in fashion design however, I have followed it all my life, and I spent two (earlier) years with a private Modeling and Fashion school - with emphasis on fashion and design. To my credit, I am a life-long connoiseur of upscale handbags, and I am well experienced in sewing - but I am not doing so now, designing is my focal point.

No, I will not be making the prototypes...in fact, I am interested in locating someone to make them for me. My short term plan is to create a few samples...see how it goes and determine from there. I have several offers for placement, and I am really interested in forming my own website asap. With that in mind, I could concentrate on having an initial launch ready for Fall 2008. As I mentioned, I am new at this aspect. Long term plan - either bring a partner into the business, or (as I learn the ropes) freelance.

I would appreciate the opportunity to further communicate with you re your expertise (sewing/knitting) and so on. Please feel free to email me, if you do not have access to my address through the forum, just respond to my reply and I will remit.

ALMOST FORGOT!!
Could you recommend (via email) a fabric company who offers designer suede and leather? I checked with Sawyerbrook, first. I am looking for a scrumptous espresso suede to coordinate with several awesome plaid wool/cashmere pieces.

Best Regards.
Linda
