Cotton Shirting, care code "C"

Postby Wendy » Fri Oct 16, 2009 10:30 am

I'm making some shirts (classic men's dress) for a friend of mine.

I just know that one day, he'll wash them in warm water, normal cycle. BUT: Pretty much all good shirting fabric is care code "C" or cold/cold/delicate cycle.

So I'm considering beating him to the punch & pre-washing the fabric in a warm/cold/regular cycle. Then throwing it into the drier. Basically: I thought I should beat the fabric up at least once before I sew with it... .

Yes, I do pre-wash my interfacings.

Is this a crazy idea? I love him dearly, but the concept of cold/cold/delicate is a bit (sigh) foreign to him....!

Thanks.

If the fabric is cotton, I say you need to beat it up and it will not hurt it at all :) I would get all the shrinkage out by washing on hot and drying on regular. I would not treat my shirt like that on a regular basis, but one time is fine. I like the security of knowing it's safe should I have a need to wash it hot and to dry it fast in the future.

Wendy, I agree with Nata that it won't do any harm to preshrink the fabric as much as possible in that you know the way the completed garment is going to be treated. Good luck with the shirts, show us some pictures when they are completed. Brenda
