I chose some cute pink cotton crinkle fabric to make a five tier crinkle skirt pattern for my pre-teen daughter. The sizes on Lyla Messinger’s Broomstick Skirt pattern range from XXS to XXL. I chose the XXS size.
I cut and sewed the sections of the skirt and gathered them using a zig zag stitch over a thin cotton cord. The skirt is sewn together by sewing the gathered top of one tier to the straight edge of the tier above it. The five tiers are stitched together horizontally before they are seamed at the center back.
The waistband is sewn by serging or zig-zagging elastic to the top of the skirt and stretching the elastic to fit the width of the waist. The elastic is secured by folding the elastic over and sewing a few rows of straight stitching over the stretched elastic.
I hemmed the skirt using Lyla’s suggestion of serging the bottom edge and then easing/rolling the serged edge over twice as you stitch straight. This is done a few inches at a time, without pins. It was a new technique for me and I had fun learning it.
To crinkle the skirt after it is completed, you rinse it in a light starch and water solution and then bind it to a broomstick or dowel with a strip of muslin. Then it dries naturally over a couple of days. My crinkle’s came out fine, but I had a problem with some of the color from the wood stick bleeding through to the skirt. To remedy this, I washed the skirt and the wood color came out and the crinkles are still in place, thanks to the starch solution. Next time I
would wrap a piece of old sheeting or scraps around the dowel before wrapping and crinkling the skirt. |
