About Us
Celebrating fabric for over 30 years!
We are a mail order fashion fabric service providing high quality, unique fabrics to the home sewer. From its humble beginnings in 1974 in Orford, New Hampshire, Sawyer Brook has grown and moved several times passing from its original owners to the current owners in 1991. Through it all, the devotion to quality and distinctive styling has kept Sawyer Brook at the forefront of the mail order fabric business. Our customers throughout the world are loyal and rely on us to meet their fashion sewing needs.

We enjoy getting to know our subscribers both on the telephone and in person. We thought you'd enjoy getting to know a little about us too. Chances are we're a lot like you. So many of my customers say I live their dream — to own a warehouse full of fabric! Well, I do enjoy it and our employees claim the same! We're just all hopeless fabricholics. When a gorgeous new fabric comes in to stock, we all stop what we're doing just to touch it!! Sound familiar? We try to share our enthusiasm with you every chance we get and really appreciate hearing back from you. Our bulletin board boasts many photos from subscribers who have shared their creations with us. We hope you'll take the time to let us get to know you too. |
Barb
Sewing since her teens (just a few decades ago !?!), Barb has worked with and sold top quality fabrics for years. As the owner of the business, her responsibilities include buying, copy- writing, advertising, marketing, cust- omer service, and group presentations. Husband, Don, handles the finances of the business in his spare time (he works full time in the finance field), and their eldest son, Andy, is responsible for web page design and implementation, continuing his support from Chicago where he is a graduate student. Adam, a recent graduate and pharmaceutical chemist, provides tech support on weekend visits. Cassie, a pediatric nurse, knows where she can find the fabrics she needs for her sewing projects! All in all, a family affair! |
Candy
A confirmed fabricholic, Candy feels she has found her calling!! Mother of three daughters and now a darling granddaughter, she has sewn for 30+ years and still can't get enough. Of all of us, she is the only one who is justified in taking home as much fabric as she does. She actually sews it up and wears it!! In addition to invoicing and inventory control, Candy assists in buying and coordinating the collections we mail to you. With her keen eye for color she is the queen of color match for threads, lining and zippers. |
Judy
Trained as a home economics teacher, Judy has a thorough knowledge of fabrics and garment construction and an obsession with all things sewing related. She tells us she has been sewing since she was 4 years old!! In charge of the cutting room, Judy examines and cuts your fabric and trains new cutters as they come on board. Long before the fabrics reach the cutting room Judy checks and tests them as they arrive in the receiving area. We count on her fabric knowledge throughout the business. Since she knows the stock so well, she is often the elf who sends you the personal swatches you request. In addition to working here and caring for her family of three grown sons and a new grandson, Judy does alterations and custom sewing for many clients in her hometown area. |
Sue
Most of you have spoken with Sue on the phone as you place your orders--she's the one with that Kentucky drawl! She has primary responsibility for shipping, tucking new swatches in your packages to make you drool! Having worked in the insurance industry many years, Sue brings us a wealth of experience in office procedures and sales. She supervises the catalog area, keeping us all on our toes on stuffer day--when we stuff and mail the swatches to you. In addition, Sue ably assists in our marketing and promotion areas. |
Colleen
Colleen is the voice behind our email newsletter and ably responds to your email inquiries. Merchandizing and evolving the web site is the major part of her job as our web business continues to grow. You'll see her work in our web photography and in our print advertising the national media. In addition, we are thrilled to have her background in merchandizing to arrange photo set ups and design our show displays. In her other life, Colleen pursues a number of creative ventures including stained glass, mosaic designs for the garden, primitive rug hooking, counted cross stitch, and knitting. She and her husband enjoy cross country skiing and have taken up motorcycling as well. Her role as mother to a teenage son and mistress to two dachshunds keeps her hopping the rest of the time! |
Dixie
Dixie, our button specialist, came to us first as a customer. We quickly scooped her up for part time work while she pursues her Masters in Counseling Psychology. "My grandmother taught me to sew when I was 12 — a good thing, since I was 6 feet tall by then, and had lots of trouble finding anything to fit!" An accomplished sewer, Dixie gave in to the urge to learn knitting and has added that to her list of creative passions. "I love it because I get to choose fiber, texture, color, and design to create my own unique garments. Plus, I get to add the final touch to my cardigans and jackets with wonderful buttons from Sawyer Brook!" |
Janee
Janee started as a sub for us and quickly became a permanent part of our cutting room staff. We've known Janee for a number of years because of her involvement with the local PACC Chapter. A sewer since childhood, she has been an active part of the community of sewers throughout her life. She's had her own custom sewing business, "Janee's Originals," since 1990, creating careerwear and special occasion clothing, as well as altering RTW. Janee says that she leapt at the chance to work in the Sawyer Brook cutting room just to be close to the wonderful fabrics and great people! |
Evelyn
Evelyn is responsible for cutting the swatches in the collection sets sent to our subscribers and the individual swatches sent to you in your packages. In addition to working at Sawyer Brook she creates exquisite dresses for brides and mothers from her home-based studio, Evelyn Bash Bridal Couture. After making her daughter's wedding gown, she decided to follow her passion and take early retirement from her career as a computer programmer. She is a member of the Professional Association of Custom Clothiers and has twice received an award in the Threads magazine design challenge for PACC members. See some of her creations at www.evelynbash.com |
Carole
A native of Colorado, Carole and her family moved East a few years ago. Connecting with other sewers was key to her relocation. We met her as a new customer and quickly realized she'd be a great addition to our cutting room staff! Carole sews for herself and her daughter and is teaching her daughter and friends to enjoy the love of sewing. |
